I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was simply glad to be out. But it did impede the speed of our progress at the construction website.
I’ll admit that building houses was not in my own job description. As I sat there with my back against a tree I poured a half jar of cool water on my head. A smile crossed my face, not because I felt much more joyful, but because I was truly content. I recognized a gentle breeze which suddenly swept round the scene and took my thoughts withit. My mind began to wonder. How can I arrive here?
For many years I had the fantasy of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing a different culture. Are not there something more your than regular and monotony? Occasionally I’d often wonder if most people were really getting in the morning motivated by the job they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I wanted a switch. I wanted to become consciously involved with something positive that could give me a feeling of purpose. Does that exist, and if so where can I sign up? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. Yet, I finally took the initiative and began to realize this dream once I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really transform the world? I wanted to find out.
Habitat only started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long term volunteers and I had been the initial to experience the program. My official name was that the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I believed that this was a tremendous opportunity since the organization was built and existed on the support of volunteers. Beginning I was a bit on edge, in due time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was incredible – that I was actually enjoying office job. I took part in the creation of materials such as a volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a taskforce for its continuous advancement of the IVP program. I administered an on-site volunteer training regime in El Salvador. Yet the greatest part about my job was really getting to work along side other volunteers, people who were there not because that they must be but have there been simply because they wanted to become.
As far as the volunteers have been concerned, my job was to coordinate home and arrival logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them throughout their stay. There was this type of charisma amongst the volunteers I would go on it a step farther and plan weekend excursions and after work excursions. We wound up not just changing the lifestyles of others, however, changing the lives of one another.
As often as I could I would break away from the office and accept volunteers build trips to Habitat construction sights during Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of one’s work. Out at the sight we’d work together with the benefitting Habitat family who was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and appreciative of our help. The scene was a fantastic amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the common bond that tied us together wasn’t the easy notion of developing a home. Only watching everybody working, laughing, grinning, and sharing generated an atmosphere therefore rich with emotion that it made me reconsider how I recognized wealth. Your house was symbolic greater than just a place of dwelling. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and an inherent comprehension of equality that we’ll carry with us to the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it might sound, it had been true. We’re not only building homes, we were building resides.
Internationally or conflict settlement or individual rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to believe there are many methods of getting involved and give back to the international community. It isn’t important where you start to start making positive gifts equally as long when you make the decision to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this really is one of the toughest decisions to create. I chose the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eradicate poverty housing? Not even close. Can I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I cannot eliminate poverty home, which directed me to this answer I was searching for. Perhaps one man can not change the planet, however, the entire world can certainly change for a single individual. And it’s this domino effect, that if disperse throughout the planet we could, together, achieve the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the heat of humanity instead of its own indifference.
