I used ton’t mind the heat so much, I was just happy to be outside. Yet, it did slow the rate of the progress at the construction site. It was grinding job between digging, mixing concrete, putting cubes, and bending rebar, most that I had little to no working experience in.
I will acknowledge that construction houses was not in my job description. A smile crossed my head, not because I felt more refreshed, but because I was truly happy. I recognized a gentle breeze which unexpectedly drifted round the landscape and required my own thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. How can I get here?
Wasn’t there something more alive than regular and monotony? Sometimes I’d often wonder if a lot of people were really getting up at the morning motivated by the work that they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I had a change. I desired to eventually become actively engaged in something positive that will provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that also exist, and if yes where can I register? Yet, I finally chose and started to see this dream when I traveled to Costa Rica to a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can one person really change the world? I desired to discover.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and activity. Habitat just started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long term volunteers and I had been the 1st to go through the program. I felt this is a tremendous opportunity since the organization was built and existed on the aid of volunteers. Beginning I was a bit on edge, but in due time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was unbelievable – that I was actually enjoying office job. I took part in the creation of substances such as an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and test forms. I caused a taskforce for the continuous improvement of this IVP program. I even handled an on-site volunteer training regime at El Salvador. The best part about my job was really getting to work along with other volunteers, people who were there not because that they had to function but have there been simply because they wanted to be.
As far as the volunteers had been concerned my role was to coordinate housing and arrival logistics, administer orientations, and support them throughout their stay. There was this type of charm amongst the volunteers I would often simply take it a step farther and plan weekend trips and after-work outings. We ended up not just changing the lives of others, however, changing the lives of one another.
Normally as I could I’d break away from the workplace and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of job. Out at the sight we would work together with the benefitting Habitat family that was consistently very receptive, helpful, and appreciative of the help. The spectacle was a fantastic amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. Yet the frequent bond which tied us together wasn’t that the simple notion of building a home. Just seeing every one working, laughing, grinning, and sharing created a feeling so rich with emotion that it made me rethink how I defined riches. Your house was emblematic greater than only a place of dwelling. It represented a unity, a coming together, along with an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry with us to the remainder of our lives. As cliché as it might sound, it was true. We were not just building homes, we were building resides.
Internationally or conflict settlement or human rights, poverty or the surroundings – it’s disheartening to believe there are many ways of getting involved and give back to the global community. It doesn’t matter where you start to begin making positive contributions just so long when you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this is one of the toughest decisions to make. Did I eliminate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Can I succeed? Definitely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I cannot eliminate poverty home, that directed me to the answer I was looking for. Perhaps one person can’t change the planet, however, the planet can certainly change for a single individual. And it’s this domino effect, which if disperse across the globe we can, together, reach the unthinkable and make a world that reflects the heat of humanity in the place of its indifference.
