I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was just glad to be out. However it did slow the speed of the progress at the construction site. It had been grinding work between digging, mixing concrete, putting cubes, and bending rebar, most of that I had little to no working knowledge in.

I’ll admit that building houses was not in my job description. A smile crossed my face, not because I felt refreshed, but because I was truly pleased. I recognized a gentle breeze which suddenly swept across the landscape and required my own thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. Just how did I get here?

For several years that I had the dream of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing a different culture. Wasn’t there something more alive than regular and monotony? Sometimes I would often wonder if a lot of people were really getting in the morning inspired by the job that they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I wanted a change. I desired to become consciously involved with something positive which could provide me with a sense of purpose. Does that exist, and if so where can I sign up? But, I finally took the initiative and began to see this dream when I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really change the whole world? I desired to learn.

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat just started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long term volunteers and that I was the initial to go through the application. I believed that this was an enormous opportunity since the company was built and existed on the support of volunteers. Starting out I was a bit on edge, but in due time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying office work. I participate in the development of substances like an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and evaluation forms. I caused a taskforce for the continuous advancement of the IVP program. I handled an on-site volunteer training regime at El Salvador. Yet the best part in my job was having to work along with other volunteers, those who were there not because they had to function but were there only because they wished to become.

As far as the volunteers were concerned, my job was to coordinate home and coming logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them through the duration of their stay. There was such a charm between the volunteers I would often take it a step farther and plan weekend trips and after-work outings. We ended up not simply changing the lifestyles of many others, but changing the lifestyles of each other.

As often as I could I’d break away from the office and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat building landscapes during Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see first hand the culmination of job. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family who was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of our help. The scene was a wonderful amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. Yet the frequent bond that tied us together wasn’t that the easy thought of building a home. Only watching everyone working, laughing, smiling, and discussing created a feeling so rich with emotion that I made me reconsider how I recognized wealth. The home was symbolic of more than just a place of residence. It symbolized a motto, a coming together, along with an inherent comprehension of equality that we’ll carry with us to the remainder of our own lives. As cliché as it may sound, it had been authentic. We’re not only building houses, but we were building resides.

Internationally or conflict resolution or human rights, the surroundings – it’s disheartening to believe there are so many ways to get involved and give back to the international community. It doesn’t matter where you start to get started making positive contributions just as long when you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this really is among the toughest decisions to make. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Can I succeed? Definitely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I cannot eliminate poverty home, which directed me into this answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 person can not change the planet, however, the world can surely change for a single individual. And it’s this domino effect, which if spread across the globe we can, collectively, reach the unimaginable and create a world that reflects the warmth of humankind in the place of its indifference.
