I didn’t mind the heat, I was just glad to be outside. Yet it did slow the rate of our progress at the construction website.

I’ll admit that building houses was not in my job description. A smile crossed my head, not because I felt much refreshed, but because I had been truly happy. I recognized a gentle breeze which unexpectedly drifted round the scene and required my thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. Just how can I get here?

For many years I had the dream of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing a different culture. Are not there something more alive than routine and monotony? Sometimes I’d often wonder if a lot of everyone was really waking in the morning motivated by the job they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I needed a change. I wanted to become consciously involved in something positive that will provide me with a sense of purpose. Does that exist, and if yes where do I sign up? Yet, I finally chose and started to see this dream when I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really transform the whole world? I desired to learn.

Habitat simply started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long term volunteers and I had been the 1st to experience the app. My official name was the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I believed this was an enormous opportunity since the organization was built and existed on the support of volunteers. Starting out I had been somewhat on edge, but in due time I found my groove over the Habitat framework. It was unbelievable – that I was actually enjoying off ice work. I took part in the growth of substances such as an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and test forms. I worked with a taskforce for the continuous advancement of the IVP program. I even handled an on-site volunteer training program in El Salvador. Yet the best part in my job was having to work alongside other volunteers, those who were there not because that they must function but were there simply because they wished to become.

As far as the volunteers were concerned, my role was to coordinate home and arrival logistics, then administer orientations, and support them during their stay. There is this type of charisma between the volunteers I’d often simply take it a step farther and plan weekend excursions and after work outings. We finished up not just changing the lives of many others, however, changing the lives of each other. Working together with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe I could accomplish almost any endeavor, however more importantly it gave me a real sense of satisfaction in to be able to work hard at work worth doing.

Normally as I could I would break away from the office and accept volunteers build trips to Habitat building landscapes throughout Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see first hand the culmination of one’s job. Out at the sight we’d work together with the benefitting Habitat family who was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of the help. The scene was a fantastic amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. Yet the frequent bond that tied us together was that the very simple thought of creating a home. Just watching everyone working, laughing, grinning, and discussing created a feeling therefore rich with emotion that I made me reconsider the way I defined riches. The house was emblematic greater than only a place of dwelling. It symbolized a motto, a coming together, and also an inherent comprehension of equality that we’ll carry with us for the remainder of our own lives. As cliché as it might sound, it was authentic. We’re not just building homes, we were building lives.

Internationally or domestically, conflict settlement or human rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to think that there are so many methods of getting involved and give back to the international community. It doesn’t matter where you start to begin making positive contributions equally as long when you make the decision to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this is among the toughest decisions to create. I chose the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Can I succeed? Definitely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I alone cannot get rid of poverty home, which directed me to the answer I was looking for. Perhaps one person can’t change the world, however, the world can certainly change for a single individual. And it’s this domino effect, that should spread throughout the globe we can, together, achieve the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the heat of mankind as an alternative of its own indifference.
